Where's Waldo? books are a favorite with my kids, and now they can enjoy Waldo's puzzling adventures on the go with Where's Waldo? apps for the iPhone and iPad from Ludia and Classic Media.

As a follow-up to the popular Where's Waldo? The Fantastic Journey released last year, new for this holiday travel season is the Where's Waldo? in Hollywood app.  We tested the app on the iPhone and found that it's definitely a game that can keep you occupied!

There are three ways to play the game in Story Mode.  Follow Waldo to find designated characters hidden in a huge canvas among stories like "The Wild West," "The Three Musketeers," and "Robin Hood."  Follow Waldo's friend Wenda for a timed test of finding characters in a much smaller scene.  Or follow Wizard Whitebeard as he tells funny riddles and ask you to find scenes in the picture that answer his clues (for instance, when he asks you to find a "horse drawn carriage," what you'll actually see is a horse drawing a carriage).

When searching through Waldo's huge canvas, the game highlights where you are as you drag along the picture:

It's a bit of a dizzying prospect to search through so much space, but the app includes pinch-to-zoom technology of your iPhone's touch screen to let you focus in greater detail on one area at a time.  We also liked the bright colors and fun animation of many of the scenes.

There is also the option to play against Waldo's arch-enemy Odlaw in a timed race to find objects, but you have to achieve a certain level of points before that feature is unlocked; you earn points by systematically working through each of the challenges.  As of the writing of this review, we haven't gotten there yet.  But knowing that I don't do so well in the timed challenged with Wenda, I'm not so sure how I'd fare against Odlaw!

Where's Waldo? in Hollywood can easily help your kids pass the time during your holiday season travels or long days of Winter break.  It's a great mind challenge and lots of fun, and for now through Christmas is available from Ludia and Classic Media for only 99 cents in the iTunes app store (regularly sells for $2.99 for the iPhone, $4.99 for the iPad).
